The class helped me realize the rich
diversity in our community, what it truly means
to be a community leader, and a behind the
scenes view of many interesting organizations.
None of that compares, however, to the 50 new
friends I made and the wealth of experiences we
shared as colleagues. Our group project is
something that will always be a part of Des
Moines and shows what a dedicated group can
accomplish.

At the time I was in the Greater Des Moines
Leadership Institute I was the President of the
South Des Moines Chamber of Commerce. My
involvement in the Institute allowed me to
better understand the issues that were facing
the overall community and to discover the
feelings and views of other community leaders
regarding the issues. After graduating I was
elected to a second term as President of the
South Des Moines Chamber and was selected as a
member of the Lt. Governor's Committee on
Economic Development. The knowledge I gained and
the relationships I developed through my
involvement in the Institute were valuable
assets in my real estate business for years to
come.

The most incredible experience that still
exists through our class is the Youth Leadership
Initiative. Several class members created this
powerful program. The relationships that started
then are stronger today and I’ve had the chance
to work with 130 unbelievable youth. I would
challenge others to get involved. |

I have lived in this area since 1989. Until
my participation in this program, I had no idea
of everything this area had to offer. I not have
a better understanding of what people mean then
the move to the area from either coasts. "Des
Moines is the best kept secret in the country!"
Additionally I have made new friendships that
will go on forever.
